From Sapper to Sapper

Jim, you served in the finest Corps in the British Army – the Royal Engineers. We are Sappers and our motto is “Ubique” which means “Everywhere.” We have no battle honours like all the other regiments because Sappers are involved in every conflict the modern British army has ever fought, including your contribution in the Suez Canal Zone in the fifties. Therefore we express a modicum of modesty; we are everywhere when we are needed – just like you were there for your family and indeed your country. First in and last out is the Sapper´s proud boast. First in to see that the terrain is safe for those advancing, clearing mines, building bridges and all the time acting as a team, a band of brothers. Like you and your family. Last out is when the Sappers are protecting withdrawing soldiers from the threat of the enemy. Protecting those you love. Like you protected your family. Sappers are special and no Royal Engineer should depart this earth without some of his favourite memories in his kitbag. Here are some of yours: Rough Rugby matches and Liverpool stands Corrie Street episodes and the hottest jazz bands Montgomery memories and art that just springs These are a few of your favourite things. To quote from “A Salute to the Engineers”, we fellow Sappers leave everyone with this thought: No fancy crest is pinned to their chest, if you read what their cap badge says, Why HONI SOIT QUI MALY PENSE is a queersome sort of praise But their modest claim to immortal fame has probably reached your ears, The first to arrive, the last to leave, the Muddy Old Engineer, The sweating, go getting, uproarious, glorious Muddy Old Enginers. Go to glory Jim, you are a fine old Muddy Engineer! From your fellow Sapper, Michael, Richard´s Cousin and proud member of the family band of brothers and sisters. Michael R. Lavery
